Atacama Desert, Bolivia
The "Earth's shadow" is the shadow that the Earth itself casts onto its atmosphere. At sunrise or sunset, the shadow is visible opposite the rising or setting sun, just above the horizon. It shows as a blue band that stretches across the horizon. In the right viewing conditions, a pink, orange or purple band is visible just above the blue band of the Earth's shadow. This band is part of Earth's upper atmosphere which is illuminated by the rising or setting sun.
