Mudpots at Námaskard
The steam vents, boiling mud pots and acidic water pools at Námaskard result from geothermal heat mainained by magma intusions near the surface. Groundwater heated by the magma, creates steam which emerges from the ground containing large amounts of hydrogen sulphide. Highly corrosive, it dissolves the rock and transforms it into a bubbling, grey-black mud porridge.
